Licensing and Insurance Questions
These are non-negotiable and should be your first questions:
- Are you licensed as a painting contractor in Nevada? (C-16 specialty contractor license required)
- Can you provide your license number so I can verify it with the Nevada State Contractors Board?
- Do you carry general liability insurance? What is the coverage amount?
- Do you carry workers' compensation insurance for your crew?
- Are your subcontractors — if any — also licensed and insured?
Prep and Process Questions
The quality of a paint job is determined more by prep than by painting. Ask:
- What does your surface preparation process include specifically?
- Will you power wash the exterior before painting?
- How do you handle caulking and minor crack repairs?
- What is your process for protecting surfaces — windows, landscaping, hardscaping — during the job?
- How many coats are included and what is the recoat time between them?
Product and Materials Questions
Vague answers here are a red flag. A professional contractor should know exactly what they're applying and why:
- What specific paint brand and product line will you use?
- Why are you recommending that product for my surfaces?
- Will you use a primer coat? If not, why not?
- What sheen level are you recommending and why?
- Can I upgrade the paint product and what would that change in cost?
Business and Contract Questions
Protect yourself with clear business terms before signing anything:
- Do you provide a written contract with itemized scope?
- What is your payment schedule? (Be cautious of more than 30–40% upfront)
- What is your warranty and what does it specifically cover?
- How do you handle disputes or work that doesn't meet expectations?
- What is your process if the project runs longer than estimated?
Experience and References Questions
For larger jobs especially, understanding who you're hiring matters:
- How long have you been painting in Las Vegas?
- Have you worked on homes in my neighborhood or HOA community before?
- Can you provide 2–3 references from similar projects in the last 12 months?
- Will the person I'm speaking with today be on-site during the job?
- How large is your crew and will it be consistent throughout the project?
